GOP Asks Tony Perkins to Write on Gay Marriage

Contrary to the assurances given by Log Cabin Republicans, the GOP has tapped Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, to write the language for the party's platform statement on marriage equality. Talk about the fox and the hen.

Perkins is known for being rabidly opposed to marriage equality. He is an avid supporter of a federal constitutional amendment banning marriage equality. He also wants the amendment to repeal all rights given to lesbian and gay couples who are now legally married.

I do not understand why these folks are so opposed to marriage equality. They tout the benefits of marriage yet believe that straight people will stop getting married if lesbians and gay men are allowed to marry. That makes absolutely no sense. Yet, they make the statement with a straight face.
I married my spouse, Betsy, on our 20th anniversary. I do not believe that my marriage has affected anyone else in the country. Granted, I live in Ohio where the marriage is not recognized but, still, who cares if I got married.

I would like to hear from anyone who has been personally affected by my marriage. I would like to hear from anyone who has decided to get a divorce because I got married. I'm not holding my breath--because no one could make the claim.

The GOP is pandering to the worst biases and prejudices of a specific segment of the population. Most people do not care if lesbians and gay men marry. They are too busy with their own lives to worry about me and mine.

And, what's with the Log Cabin Republicans. Why do people who are attacked daily by a political party want to be part of that party? How can they continue to believe they have a place in that rapidly shrinking tent. LCR--the Republicans do not want you there. They want your money, but they also want to deny you the rights that other Americans enjoy.

Most of those opposed to marriage equality raise religious issues. Well, I'm not religious. I do not belong to any organized religion and do not plan to join one anytime soon. Besides, Jesus would be on my side. After all, he never said anything about homosexuality. He did have much to say about divorce, but that doesn't fit the right-wing rhetoric.

And, remember, we are talking about someone who hung out with 12 other guys. And, many of them left their wives and families to follow him. Talk about traditional family values.
